ZUN ZUN EGUI / INFINITE LIVEZ / SJ ESAU / ROBIN ALLENDER - LIVE (24th Jan)

Oh, bit late posting this one. This was a great great night! I went on my own but ended up bumping into soo many good good people (most of who make music in Bristol) which made me feel alot less like a loner..as i normally do at The Croft. Saying that, i'm pretty sure i did end up 'dancing'  on my own at the end of the night. It was quite a boozy night, don't blame me, blame the music. Robin Allender was (i hate to use this word) lovely. I always enjoy his stuff. He'd be right at home on Fence Records i think. There was a great bit of in-between chat with Big Jeff about his time on 'Skins' which made me laugh. This was probably the 8/9th time i've seen SJ Esau now..and the best!! His new songs sounded amazing and the visuals really worked well. Some of the visuals were quite similar to my stuff, we have a similar taste in child-like painting. Below are some photos and videos from the night. Infinite Livez was..ermm...ok. Hit and miss. He seemed alot more up for it when i saw him last at the Venn Festival last year. I've not given up on him though. He's a wierd one, i'm sure he'll surprize me again. First time i'd seen Zun Zun Egui after hearing really good things about them over the past few months (mainly from SJ Esau). Woooo! Brilliant! I may have been a liddle tipsy by this point but i'm sure they had more of an influence on my booty-shakin'! I don't/can't dance to much so it's always a good sign if i'm moving. Next thing i know is that i'm waking up at 5am on my front door (to my flat, i got through the first door, but couldn't make it inside the flat??). A little bird told me that OLO Worms will be playing with them soon. Video from the night below..

PIVOT / SJ ESAU - LIVE (15th May)

I can't wait for SJ Esau's new stuff to get recorded! It's amazing! I love his new lyric about zooming in on an eye "..yooooooousing photoshop". I enjoy Pivot alot more live than on record, not to say that i don't enjoy their album, it's just they are soo awesome live (i like using the word awesome at the moment, you have to do in an Austrailian accent though..which actually is relavant here as that's where the band are from). They were even more impressive than the last time i saw them (Dot2Dot festival '08). They always seem to get compared to Battles, i think i actually prefer them live to Battles..but prefer Battles on record. The combination of the band and my rucksack full of whiskey destroyed me! I didn't take any photos or videos, see live video below..

GLASTONBURY REVIEW (Part 3)

Final post i promise. A week late i know, but here it is if you're still interested. Fans of bullet points rejoice!

(WARNING! This post contains D list celebrities and backstage gossip)

THURSDAY

Background Info > I got my Glastonbury ticket for free by agreeing to work over the weekend. Turns out the job i was gonna do (driving cups of tea round the site) had been filled. I had passed all the police checks etc so i was down on the list to work even though i wasn't needed.

We arrived on site after a off-road chase to avoid questions from security. Upon entry at 11pm we were told that we couldn't pitch up our tents, ha! good start. I had a wonderful few hours sleeping in the back of a car.

FRIDAY

After a fair few complications we recieved our beautiful fluorescent coats and got our security wristbands which doubled up as an all-areas backstage pass..raaah ha ha! I win again! I'm cocky now but for the whole weekend i was in constant fear of being rumbled. I think i had the coat in my possession for no more than 2 minutes before dumping it in the corner of my tent and running into the festival. This was my 4th Glastonbury but i still felt a wee bit giddy when i walked in. Mud, yeah it was a bit muddy..no bother. Within about an hour i had lost (not through choice) my friend and her friend who had got me in to the festival in the first place. Shame....although this did now give me complete control! Wooooohooooo! single life! I cracked open one of my smuggled tin's of cider, took myself by the hand and set off on a 3 day (all inclusive) bender.

Enough with the paragraphs, here come the BULLETINS!!..

If this had been last week i would have gone into detail of what happened over the weekend but i won't cos it's nearly 2 weeks since Glastonbury and i'm a bad bad blogger. You wouldn't want to hear it all anyway..too much juicey info, you couldn't handle it. Below are some little nuggets that i can remember from the festival all jumbled together (in no order). Here come the BULLETINS again!

* Because i was lonesome most of the weekend, i would (when slighty worse for wear) go through my phone and call up people for no reason other than to Billy Brag. Apparently i left loads of ridicous messages that didn't make much sense at all..this is the only one from 100's that got saved >

CLICK THE ARROW TO STREAM OR RIGHT CLICK TO DOWNLOAD

This is a video of my housemate receiving one of these annoying calls..CLICK TO WATCH.

* Spent most of Sunday backstage (oooh get you!) with The Fence Collective (our label). Much fun was had hanging out with them, raiding band rider's and fridge's and pretending to be important (while wearing wellies). Met Gruff Rhys again which was a highlight. Couldn't believe me luck when i snapped out of my daze to realise i was walking on stage! Ended up watching Adem, King Creosote, & Gruff Rhys sets from the side of the stage. Sadly there is no video on youtube or the BBC site. I had the biggest idiot grin on. Below is a photo of the Park Stage with an arrow pointing to me (i think)..

* For a kick i pretended i was down to my last pennies and was sold a cut price sausage roll for 20p when in fact i had £50 on me and another £50 back in my tent.

* Spent the end of Saturday & Sunday night at a few of the backstage parties (you hate me don't you?..or maybe you feel sorry for me?). Every where you looked there were celebs! awww yes! I won't name drop but i had drinkies with THEM, SOME OF THEM, A COUPLE OF THEM, and A GAGGLE OF THEM. I had a great loud row with HER & HIM (who were being all lovee dovee. They needed putting in their place). I was approached and mistaken AGAIN! for HIM. It was wierd cos looking around you obviously had people like me pretending to be important or famous and then you had the famous important people chatting to the other famous important people trying to ignore us. I told anyone who asked (and a few did surprizingly) who i was that i was the new Hollyoaks heartthrob who had just been in Shipwrecked. They didn't buy it.

* Spent most of the weekend on the run from the security people who had me down to work. Stupidly i answered my phone "JAMES!! You gotta get back here now and make sandwiches! NOW!" "I'll call you back" i replied. "Freeeeee as a biiiird" i sang while sinking my pear cider. Cheese Sandwiches? oh, i thought you said Jam.

* Took a shower in the security campsite. There was a poo in there! I had to tread very carefully.

* Cliche! I went to watch the sun rise at the Stone Circle, but fell asleep.

* Saw walking through the mud..Upsidedownface (Evis), Suggs in a wig and sunglasses (why?), Howard Marks (of course), John Cale (i think, could be a dream though?). Nearly got knocked down by JME & mates as they ran through the mud very late for their slot.

* Joined the little Bristol collective at the SJ Esau / Rose Kemp sets.

* Spent a good few hours early one morning in a stupid fit of giggles. The reason? Scaring people with
A POT OF COW. You really had to be there. I stumbled across a big christian homeless shelter where people who had lost their tents to the weather to stay and sleep. Barely able to contain my excitement i.. Can you guess what happened?

* All the random stuff you do / see at Glastonbury. Can't write it all down, just imagine what i did..then scrub that out and...crfvery fq ^& *^&78312 fwrqe g54w rthgwefWEf2988XXUHJBJBHLLQ!!! that sums up my Glastonbury. Yaaaay! It's over now.

SJ ESAU

Above is the cover for the brilliant new SJ Esau album which is out on Anticon at the end of June. It's a corker!! Next week my brother and i will begin filming the video for the the song 'I Threw A Wobbly'. Exciting! Maybe you'll see it one day. I hope we don't screw it up. Below is a pic of him in his garden..where we'll have fun smashing stuff up..

Check out the podcast here did for OLO Radio back in 2006 over HERE.

FREEZE PUPPY & SJ ESAU - LIVE (13th March)

Two of my favourite Bristol boys! Every time time i see them they seem to get better and better. Both were amazing on the night! Freeze Puppy really makes me smile. I don't think there's anyone out there that's even remotely similar to him. As i've said before SJ Esau's new songs are soo good, they spin me round..baby right round, like a record baby, right round.

THE FENCE HOP (Full Deatils)

THE FENCE HOP - October 4th and 5th 2008

Two days of music from round the isles of Britain, at various Bristol city centre venues. All the acts playing are part of Fence Records, Scotland’s finest micro-indie folk label - home of King Creosote, James Yorkston, Lone Pigeon and many others.

Saturday afternoon sees 5 acts play at the Scout Hut, Redcliffe. This cosy, waterside venue is ideally suited to intimate shows, and this afternoon includes a very special acoustic performance from The Pictish Trail.

On Saturday evening, 'Fence Hop' will be based at Mother’s Ruin, with a live performance from Bristol’s OLO Worms, and 4 teams of DJ’s including Anticon’s SJ Esau. Pop fun guaranteed.

Sunday afternoon’s entertainment moves to the Hillgrove Porter Stores in Kingsdown, for ‘Sigh and Die’, an afternoon of entirely random DJ’ing from the performing Fence acts and a live performance by WiQwar, a guitar and laptop duo who make blissed out sun-kissed acoustic buzzings.

On Sunday evening Cleaner Records and Fence Records host Rozi Plain’s album launch night at the Cube cinema, Stokes Croft. Performances with full bands from Rozi, The Pictish Trail and Sleeping States are the perfect way to end the 'Fence Hop' weekend.

Schedule

Saturday Afternoon

The Scout Hut, Redcliffe, 3 till 6pm, £4 entry on door.

Hardsparrow - purveyor of off-beat, synth-shanty song-writing preoccupied with loneliness and death. A joy! (www.myspace.com/hardsparrow)

The Pictish Trail - Fence’s best kept secret, till now. His newly-minted ‘Secret Soundz Vol.1’ album has been released to high praise from all who’ve heard it - “A post-summer trove of sun-warped electro, Reg Perrin homages and lambent anthems’ (Nicola Meighan - The Wire) (www.myspace.com/pictishtrail)

Saturday Night

Mothers Ruin, Off Baldwin Street, 9pm till 2am, £2 entry on door.

SAFETYWORD, YOU & THE ATOM BOMB, SJ ESAU (Live 17/2/07)

SJ Esau..

Safetyword..

You & The Atom Bomb..

here's what i thought of them all..

i'm only joking of course. it were BRILL!! my 3 fave bristol pop acts on the same bill! the place was packed! it sold out really early, leaving many dissapointed. seemed like most of the Bristol music scene were there (not that it's something that should be mentioned really). i ruined the night by carrying on after the gig and falling asleep in the corner of a club on my own.

thanks to Delifinger & Seaweed for the snaps.

GIGS LAST WEEK

Last week i saw Good Shoes, Xerox Teens, Rose Kemp, You & The Atom Bomb, & SJ Esau. reviews? erm..well..i really hate writing reviews. ok, very quickly then..

Xerox Teens - The Fall mixed with Jesus & Mary Chain (too young to know it).
Rose Kemp - powerful!
You & The Atom Bomb - Toe Tappin' Thigh Slappin' fun.
SJ Esau - Ramshackle Brilliance.
Good Shoes - i went on my own as no one belives they're anything more than a run-of-the-mill indie band. WRONG! although i did feel like i was addending an NME fashion shoot. i was the oldest person there! young scenesters everywhere! the only people older than me were the parents of the under 14s. they were so funny! when the moshing kicked off they got all protective and formed a human wall to save their children from the sweaty, spotty grease balls. Good Shoes were good, very good. hopefully the kids will get bored and move on.

OLO RADIO - G03 - SJ ESAU - 'BOTH MY WRONG HALF OF THE PRIVATE TRUMPET' - 25/10/06

Our next guest mix comes from Bristol's favourite pop tart SJ ESAU! 'Both My Wrong Half Of The Private Trumpet' is the odd name he's given to this EXCLUSIVE mix he made for OLO Radio. Enjoy!

BRISTOL MUSIC

> MY ANSWER..
(Sorry about the spelling, you know the deal by now).

I'm sat in my bedroom thinking about my tme in this city. I can only really give you a personal view, i don't wanna be the man who gets the facts and figures wrong. I've been living in Bristol for 9 years now and i'd say that it for me it's been a game of two halves.

For the first four years in Bristol (while i was at university) i pretty much ignored music made in Bristol. I really don't know why? No logic to my thinking i'm afraid. I kinda thought nothing good could be made on my doorstep (even though there was good music being made inside that doorstep, over time i lived with 6 friends who made great music in their bedrooms..one of which became a bandmate). Maybe there was good stuff made during that time? I don't know? Obviously there was a whole load of special stuff back in the early to mid 90's. I'm not gonna look back now..well i am actually, to the last 5 years that i've spent here in the city.

I remember being up on top of a hill having a bonfire with some friends i met and became to know through Fence Records (probably my favourite label). These were Rozi Plain, Rachael Dadd & Sam Romanhead. They had another friend up that hill, well..they had about 50. But that friend i mentioned was called Rose Kemp. She was/is a great big powerful lady (ha!) who i was/still am scared of. She has a great voice. She made it rain howling mud at Glastonbury a few years ago when i saw her and SJ Esau perform a few years back. That night on the hill she torched me on the fire for admitting i knew nothing about the local music scene and that i wasn't that bothered. SSSSORRY!!? She was really angry with me, she got all hyped up and began reeling off a list of band names and singers i'd never heard of (one name i remember was Team Brick)..some of which were sitting around us drinking tins of pop, eating spuds and such like. After that night i thought i'd better get more involved and take notice what was around me more. BUT i didn't. At this time me, my brother and a friend had decided we might have a go at this music game. None of us were any good really. I was/still am COMPLETELY useless. We started by setting up an (online) radio station called OLO Radio. So around this time i was more interested in a whole load of other music being made around the world (except Bristol it would seem).

I hop from job to job hoping one day something will happen. Nothing has. I joined Fopp back in 2005 wher i began working as a slave in their warehouse being forced to listen to hours and hours of death metal. Probably the ONLY genre of music i can't handle. One of the chaps who liked the odd bit of Slayer was a young fella called Steve Kerrison who played in a band called Safetyword. We became mates and he gave me a copy of their 1st EP (with him on board, they were a three peice before). It took it home and played it to death. It was AMAZING! It was pretty odd too. I asked if i could have a go at making a video for them and he said yes. I never did. I never do. It's just something i ask every musician i ever meet. It does'nt matter how big they are, i'd ask Bono!! This year i am suppost to be making videos for about 10 different Bristol acts. NEVER GONNA HAPPEN.

Anyway, i'd go and see Safetyword ALL the time. In total i saw them more than any other band i've ever seen. Steve continued to burn me new EPs until eventually his generosity ran out and i was forced to buy their album. They split up in 2008 leaving alot of locals very upset. They helped my band (OLO Worms) by giving us a bit of confidence at our first gigs. Before they split when i used to go to the live gigs i'd notice quite a few faces that would pop up again and again. These people also made music in Bristol. I got to know a few of them, mainly through Safetyword tipping them off to me. People like SJ Esau, Team Brick, Freeze Puppy. All of which i'm big fans of and go see when i can. It's like a chain reaction where everytime you see a local band you like you seem to find out about 2 more new ones. Everyone plays with each other all the time.

So i began to know more about the interesting music being made in Bristol and some good local festivals (Venn being the best). There was also alot of music i hated. I still hate alot of local bands. Not naming though, i'm a puny yellabelly who'll get kicked in when they put down those guitars and girls. Thing is a lot of the people i really like and respect like the bands i dislike which kind of brings me onto my main feeling about Bristol music. On the hole..EVERYONE LOVES each other, well pretty much. Even if people don't like each others music they are still nice to each other and support anything made locally. I'm pretty sure there are people i know who really can't stand the music we make, i see it when we play, i see the pain in their eyes. But still they are willing to buy you a drink or not buy you a drink for your own safety and well-being no matter how much you beg (thanks). I don't live in other cities, so i'm not sure if that's the same case anywhere else but it is here. It's quite a small city too so you see the same people all the time. I'm quite good now at avoiding the Larry David 'stop and chat'.

Another very very nice thing about Bristol is that there doesn't seem to be a single scene or one popular type of music (thank god! I can't wear clothes that belong to others or that are tight or that aren't made out of flannel). Everyone's pretty broad-minded and willing to try different stuff out. There seems to be loads of great nights going on. Sometimes i'm sober enough and with it enough to get a bit of a kick out of them. Most of the time i'm not. Now, a confession..i'm being honest here. You see rather than going to good local gigs and club nights, (and there are loads! and without sounding like an idiot youth TV presenter, i have been a big fan of emirG & petsbuD..Bristol's finest sounds of the last few years) i'd rather spend my very little money i have with my mates getting pissed watching X Factor. Most of my friends don't wanna go to these nights and gigs so i don't. I don't wanna be where it's at, i HATE being at a place where it's suppost to be cool or whatever (cue lots of laughing and ribbing). I always feel like i'm soo boring. I'd rather be angry and annoyed by other normal boring guff and try and use that energy for my own creative good. I wanna battle others in the game, not join forces with them. Musicians are wierdo's, i'm not keen on hanging round with them, they bring me down. At the end of the day i have no real connection with Bristol or the people who make music here. I live here, like most of the people, but i could be anywhere. It's good fun city, it produces some of the most original sounds in the whole country..blah blah blah. Come and visit, just don't knock for me if you're involved in music.

* Some songs that appeared on last years list i had owned before they actually came out properly this year (as singles or on albums released this year) so in some cases i will be entering them again on this years list. In some cases i won't, depends whether or not i think of them as '07 or '08 songs. My game, my rules..ha! Their have been a few amazing tracks i've been hammering over the last month or so that would have definitly featured right up near the top of the list (if not the very top). They'll be out next year so i'll leave them off this list and save them for the '09 one.

The rules this year are that each artist may have up to 3 entries, 2 of which may be tied in the same position (or not).
