ARIEL PINK / FREEZE PUPPY - LIVE (17th May)

JOY! One of the most fun gigs so far this year. Freeze Puppy supported and was great as ever. Quite a different set to the times i've seen him before, more guitar solo's..which cracked me up! He's soo funny. It's odd cos i really can't work out whether he means to be funny or not. I've spoken to him quite a bit and he's pretty normal but when he gets up on stage he transforms into this odd wind-up pop puppet doing jolly tunes about naming babies. His album is soo good, i think it gets a proper release soon..you should check it out, it's unlike anything else. The last time i saw Ariel Pink (at Venn Festival '06) it was one of the biggest let downs ever! I wouldn't say i was a massive fan of his but i like his stuff and what he does and how he does it. This time he went all out! pulling pop star faces! ..and he even faced the crowd! He played aload of his best known tunes including my favourite 'For Kate I Wait'. People went mental and crowd surfed.

Below are some photos i nicked off someone on Facebook (can't remember who to credit? sorry)..

021209 > 041209

Dreamt we sped up 1 of our new songs while we watched the world cup on a bed...that's for worms. 'Honey Oats & More' is my favourite cereal at the moment. I have decided because i love my new nipple plaster pot sooo much im gonna take it on next years OLO tour. Might give out nipples to fans. God, Mark Lawrenson looked awful on the football highlights, he looked like he'd just been dragged out of bed. Been wearing a pink t-shirt and bad stubble, i am a bum too. Solange Knowles is my new favourite celebrity, you really need to hear her amazing Dirty Projectors cover (below). I've lost 2 lbs in 2 days. After a tip from Twocsinak i'm gonna rent out the film 'David Holzman's Diary' pronto! He's says it's like my life.

We confirmed the 1st Carrie Vanilow gig! Sat Feb 13th. Keep that date free or i'll be your date the following day! THAT'S A THREAT!! I'll post up more details in 2010.

Ate tasty club sandwiches at a fancy restaurant with my Dad, Grandad & Aunt, had a lovely time. Laughed at today's Daily Express (front page!!!?) headline - 'CHRISTMAS TV IS 600 HOURS OF REPEATS'..the outrage!!!!!!! Been cooking sausages whilst juggling the running. "Hello, is that Don Luis Lopez?". Steve Mason and i twittered about hoovers.

Gorlkeepers (OLO side project feat. ML & GJ) are playing @ The Lanes (bowling alley) Bristol - Sat Dec 12th (about 6/7ish?).

This has been the best year for music since 1999 or 2003 in my opinion. Very much enjoyed John Lydon on Culture Show, i could listen to him talk forever. Tuned in for one of the last ever 'Special Half Hour's, it was an honour and privilege Richard - i will miss SHH sooo much! Watched 'Jeremy Kyle Confronts Knife Crime' in which Jeremy Kyle confronted a few naughty teenagers, acted all tough then and got a bit scared and ran off. Cleaned the house drains, GLAMOUR! Got sent a 3D xmas card from Japan! Genki hey!!

Sat down to watch the World Cup draw..well i thought i was, i turned on the TV and Jasper Carrott was doing the world cup draw!!!??...oooops! wrong channel, its 'Golden Balls'. 'Golden Balls' is soo confusing!?? whats going on!? STOP TALKING!! Back to the real draw..Charlize Theron!? Acting all funny. What was she doing? Was it dumb or fake dumb? GET IT ON WITH IT!!! Why the hell didn't they get Paul Gambaccini to commentate on it!!!? It would be sooo much more fun. Shame Alan wasn't in charge of the draw too. Good draw for us English failures, let's get carried away all over again!

To bleed or not to bleed, that is the 3mm design question..OLO design work probelms. Got an amazing offer! Something i've always wanted to do. I Won't say anything unless i jinx it. Felt a bit glum that i missed last night's Ariel Pink, SJ Esau, Bass Clef gig AND Jamie's karaoke party. Listened back to recordings of last weeks OLO session and the new song 'Disney' - its DARK and gives me the creeps. LOVE it.

THAT WAS VENN

The Aliens (Friday night)..photo taken by bhoywonder. This is the only photo i have from the whole weekend, it's not the best snap ever taken but i should'nt criticize the man..bhoy.

Right, i'm not gonna write any kind of in-depth review or anything.

friday night..
* 65 Days Of Static - nan loud, not bad.
* The Aliens - really enjoyed them although they did'nt quite live up to my very high expectations. something was'nt quite right, can't really put my finger on it. i think the album's gonna be amazing though after hearing a few new songs.
* Optimo Dj's - don't remember, i'm sure they were good.
* Tetine - don't remember, was on my last legs at this point.

after being told by a number of different people that i was worrying over nothing when it came to me being a little little bit scared of venturing into St Pauls, i was greeted on saturday afternoon by a load of policemen and police tape who told me that there had been two stabbings. oh.

saturday afternoon/night..
* Safetyword - brilliant as always, best thing all weekend.
* Fog - pretty good, very different to what i had come to expect. full band 'n all.
* Team Brick - mad! in a good way.
* Knowledge Of Bugs - only caught a few minutes. liked him in the past.
* Volcano The Bear - soo pretentious! worst thing i've ever seen!
* Ariel Pink - bit dissapointing.
* Kid Carpet - good, shouts 'n buzzes.
* Toolshed - can't remember.
* Kode 9 - sat under a massive speaker and let bass wash me into the early hours.

then, 2 kitkat chunky's later i was home. good weekend. well done Venn!

(sorry, that was a really bad review)

VENN FESTIVAL

Hey! Bristol's Venn Festival kicks off tomorrow! i'll be out there roaming the streets of St Pauls and Stokes Croft trying very hard not to cross any of the locals. i see most of them when i'm at work in the courts, they say its best not to mix business with pleasure. anyway..the music, this year's line up is soo diverse, loads to see!

tomorrow kicks off with Tetine, Max Richter, Crescent, 65DaysOfStatic, Optimo DJs, Vashti Bunyan, and THE ALIENS! now..this is a BIG event for a old Beta Band obsessive. it'll be my first time seeing the re-grouped trio..i canee wait!

saturday's all-dayer is gonna be hard work. there's soo much i want to catch. 1st up..SAFETYWORD! regular readers of this blog should be well aware of my love of these skamps. other peeps i've got to go see include..Ariel Pink, Fog, Team Brick, Kid Carpet, Rose Kemp, Francois, Toolshed, Bass Clef, Kode 9, and Knowledge Of Bugs.

I'll report back soon..i hope i'll be back.

SAFELY CLIMBING THE LADDER

Olo pals Safetyword keep on moving upwards. i've recently heard they will be playing with Ariel Pink at this year's Venn Festival, and in this week's Venue magazine they get a name check by Portishead's Geoff Barrow! do you like the way i stuck in 'pals' now they are heading places? hated them before, i only went to their gigs and listened to their music cos i felt sorry for them. here's the page from the magazine (click to enlarge)..
